A detailed and expressive mid-19th-century charcoal or graphite drawing of a sheep, by German artist Jean-Ferdinand Chaigneau . The animal is shown in profile, standing with a slight hunch. The artist masterfully uses white chalk highlights and charcoal strokes to render the woolly texture of the fleece and the underlying musculature of the body.
