This oil on canvas portrait, painted circa 1828, depicts Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737-1832), a wealthy American planter and an influential Founding Father, notable as the only Catholic and the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence. The subject is shown seated in a red chair, wearing dark clothing and a white cravat, and holding a book in his hands. The work is a sensitive depiction that captures his aged likeness and is housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
