The Artist of this Painting is Paul Gauguin (1848–1903). For the details about the License of this Painting, information is currently unavailable.
Created during Paul Gauguin's pivotal first residency in Tahiti in 1892, Mata Mua (Tahitian for "In Olden Times") serves as a nostalgic, pastoral hymn to an ancient, uncorrupted island culture. Divided down the center by a massive, sculptural tree trunk, the composition portrays an idealized, mythical past. In the foreground, two Tahitian women sit peacefully on the grass, one playing a traditional nose flute.
