This panel is part of a famous series depicting the life of Saint Anthony the Abbot, the desert hermit. The saint is shown as an elderly man with a long white beard, wearing a dark monk's habit and carrying a "tau" staff. He walks along a winding, stony path through a desolate, otherworldly landscape characterized by bare, skeletal trees and rolling, pale hills.
