In this masterful work, Giovanni Paolo Panini depicts the legendary encounter between Alexander the Great and the Cynic philosopher Diogenes. According to the tale, when the world-conquering King Alexander asked the impoverished philosopher if there was any favor he could grant him, Diogenes famously replied, "Yes, stand out of my sunlight."
