Description:
An elaborate late 18th-century architectural fantasy intended as a design for a theatre stage set. The composition uses dramatic lighting and perspective to depict an ancient Roman military encampment scene under the cover of night. Monumental arches and columns form the internal structure, opening up to an exterior view of a field of tents and distant hills. Figures in period dress, a chariot, and a central decorative pedestal add to the dramatic atmosphere.
