In this luminous Rococo masterpiece, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo captures the mythological moment when the sun god Apollo pursues the nymph Daphne, as told in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Daphne, already in the process of transformation into a laurel tree to escape Apollo’s advances, raises her arms as branches and leaves begin to sprout from her fingers. Apollo, clothed in a billowing golden drapery and radiating divine light, reaches out with yearning. Below them, the river god Peneus—Daphne’s father—spills water from an urn, symbolizing the flowing river and the emotional turmoil of the scene. The background is filled with soft, atmospheric clouds and mountainous terrain, amplifying the drama and tension of this mythological encounter.
