Venus and Cupid by Lorenzo Lotto, painted in the early 1520s, is a sensuous and playful Renaissance interpretation of classical mythology. The nude Venus reclines on a blue drapery, adorned only with a diaphanous veil and a lavish jeweled headdress. Her son, Cupid, depicted as a mischievous winged child, urinates through a laurel wreath—a symbolic gesture referencing fertility and erotic pleasure. The composition is rich with allegorical elements: the rose petals on Venus’s body, the burning incense, and the conch shell hanging in the background allude to love, fertility, and sensuality. Lotto’s attention to detail and use of vibrant color enhance the luxurious and intimate atmosphere of the scene, blending eroticism with refined elegance.
