This painting depicts a close-up view of Christ carrying the heavy wooden cross on his shoulder, a pivotal scene from the Passion narrative. Christ is shown with a crown of thorns piercing his brow, and his face bears an expression of sorrow and physical strain. He has a long, dark beard and his eyes are downcast. A reddish-pink garment is draped over his shoulder and arm. To the left of Christ, a figure with a somewhat grotesque expression is visible, seemingly mocking or jeering at him. This figure has a mustache and appears to be wearing a cap or turban-like head covering. The background is dark and indistinct, focusing the viewer's attention on the emotional and physical suffering of Christ and the callousness of his tormentor.
