This painting depicts Saint Francis of Assisi in a state of spiritual ecstasy, supported by an angel. Saint Francis, dressed in the brown habit of the Franciscan order, is shown with his eyes closed and his body seemingly limp, suggesting a swoon or a mystical trance. An angel with large wings gently cradles him, their gaze tenderly directed towards the saint. The setting is a dark, natural environment, possibly a forest at night, with a faint light reflecting on a body of water in the background. The figures are dramatically illuminated by a strong, focused light source, a technique characteristic of the tenebrism associated with Caravaggio and his followers. The contrast between the light and shadow emphasizes the emotional intensity and the spiritual nature of the scene.
