This tempera on panel painting, created between 1435 and 1445, is a profile portrait of an unknown princess, often identified as Ginevra d'Este. The sitter is depicted against a dark background of flowers, foliage, and butterflies, which are detailed with naturalistic precision. The profile pose was inspired by classical Roman coins and was popular in the European courts of the time.
