This fresco, titled The Crucifixion of Saint Peter, was painted by Michelangelo around 1546–1550 and is located in the Cappella Paolina (Pauline Chapel) in the Vatican. The scene depicts the martyrdom of Saint Peter, who, according to tradition, was crucified upside down at his own request, deeming himself unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ. Michelangelo portrays the intense physical effort and emotional turmoil surrounding the moment of the crucifixion. The composition is crowded with figures in dynamic poses, radiating tension and gravity. The elderly Peter, calm amidst the chaos, becomes the spiritual anchor of the scene. The fresco reflects Michelangelo’s mature style, marked by powerful anatomy, emotional depth, and profound spiritual symbolism.
