Description:

This painting depicts the final communion of Saint Mary of Egypt. The saint, an elderly woman with a gaunt appearance, kneels to receive the Eucharist from Saint Zosimus, an aged monk with a long white beard, who holds a golden chalice and a host. Saint Mary of Egypt is partially draped in a light-colored cloth, and her hands are clasped in prayer. Attending the scene are several angels. One angel, kneeling in the foreground, holds a lit candle. Two other cherubic angels hover above, looking down with reverence. The setting is a sparse landscape with rolling hills and a few trees under a cloudy sky, suggesting a remote and holy location.
