| In this exquisite early 15th century panel painting titled "Saints Peter, Romuald, Catherine of Alexandria and Jerome, Main Tier Right Panel", Italian artist Giovanni dal Ponte (1385-c.1437) masterfully depicts four venerated saints in rich hues of red, white, gold and brown tempera paint. Saint Peter holds the keys to heaven, Saint Romuald dons his monk's habit, Saint Catherine clutches her martyr's palm, and Saint Jerome pores over sacred texts. The ornate Gothic arches and delicate gold-leaf details imbue the scene with a celestial aura, conveying the saints' holy status. Dal Ponte's harmonious composition and graceful figures exemplify the refined elegance of early Renaissance religious art around 1420-1430. |
