This painting depicts a somewhat humorous scene unfolding outside what appears to be an abbey or monastery. A group of monks in brown robes are gathered around several donkeys. One monk is kneeling and seems to be struggling with a donkey that has fallen and scattered its load, which includes bottles and other items. Another monk appears to be scolding the fallen donkey. The other monks watch with various expressions, some amused and some concerned. A small black dog runs playfully in the foreground. The background shows the stone architecture of the abbey and a landscape with bare trees and a distant town. The overall tone suggests a lighthearted narrative within a religious setting.
