Description:

This tempera and gold on wood panel painting, created between 1440 and 1445, masterfully combines two pivotal biblical narratives. On the right, within an elaborately rendered architectural setting, the Archangel Gabriel appears before the Virgin Mary, delivering the news of the Annunciation. Mary, seated, receives the divine message with humility. On the left, a stark contrast is presented with the scene of "The Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise." An angel, brandishing a sword, forcefully guides Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden, depicted as a lush but now sorrowful landscape. Above this scene, God the Father appears in a golden celestial sphere. The use of gold leaf, vibrant colors, and meticulous detail are characteristic of early Renaissance Italian art, highlighting the interconnectedness of salvation history, from the Fall of Man to the Incarnation.
