This dynamic painting by Francesco Solimena vividly depicts the mythological scene of Boreas, the winged god of the North Wind, abducting Orithyia, the daughter of Erechtheus, the king of Athens. Boreas is shown powerfully lifting Orithyia into the air, her arms outstretched in distress and surprise. Several other figures on the ground react with shock and alarm, their gestures conveying fear and helplessness. Cherubs float in the sky above, some bearing torches. The scene is filled with movement and dramatic tension, characteristic of Baroque painting. The background suggests a classical setting with architectural elements and a landscape receding into the distance.
