This painting, part of Nicolas Poussin's series "The Four Seasons," depicts a scene evoking the season of summer. The foreground is dominated by a wheat field where various figures are engaged in harvesting. A central interaction shows a standing man gesturing towards a kneeling woman who gathers fallen grain. This likely represents the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz, where Ruth, gleaning barley in the fields of Boaz, earns his favor. Other figures are scattered throughout the field, cutting and bundling the wheat. The landscape extends into the background with rolling hills, trees, and distant architectural elements under a partly cloudy sky. The overall palette is warm and golden, reflecting the heat and abundance of summer.
