Description:

Created in 1874 using oil on wood, the horizontal painting depicts a dense, sun-dappled interior of the Forest of Fontainebleau, near the village of Barbizon, France. The artist uses a thick application of paint (impasto) and bold brushstrokes to capture the texture of the trees and foliage, a technique possibly inspired by 17th-century Dutch landscapists.
