This moving work, "A Young Officer Saying Farewell to His Family" (1841), is by the Austrian Biedermeier artist Carl Schindler (1821–1842). Executed in watercolor and gouache, it perfectly captures the intimate and sentimental style of the Biedermeier period, which focused on the daily lives and emotions of the middle class. The scene depicts a young military officer in his uniform tenderly embracing his family—likely his wife and small children—before an imminent departure.
