This dramatic drawing, Alexander the Great before the Corpse of Darius, was created by the Venetian artist Francesco Fontebasso in the 1750s or 1760s. The work captures a poignant moment from ancient history: Alexander the Great, King of Macedon, finds the body of his defeated opponent, Darius III, the Persian king, who had been killed by his own vassal Bessus while attempting to flee.
