Description:
This religious oil on canvas painting depicts a vision of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child on clouds, appearing to the kneeling Saint Philip Neri in a moment of divine connection. Piazzetta used dramatic lighting (chiaroscuro) and a rich, somber palette to emphasize the profound spiritual awe of the saint. The work is a sketch for an altarpiece located in the Church of Santa Maria della Fava in Venice and is now held in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
