Description:
This oil on panel painting, also sometimes known as the Stoclet Madonna, depicts the Virgin Mary tenderly holding the infant Jesus. The figures are set against a dark background, a technique known as chiaroscuro which makes them appear remarkably lifelike and three-dimensional. Bellini's work is renowned for its sensitive and realistic color usage, as well as its ability to create a sense of naturalness and humanity in sacred subjects.
