The artwork is executed in pen and ink with watercolor over graphite. It depicts a dramatic scene from the Old Testament Book of Samuel (1 Samuel 28). King Saul, who is on his knees in the lower left, has consulted the Witch of Endor (right) to summon the spirit of the deceased prophet Samuel before a battle with the Philistines. Samuel's large, shrouded ghost appears in a burst of light in the center, pointing downward as he foretells Saul's impending defeat and death.
