This intimate work depicts the Virgin Mary in a state of deep, quiet contemplation. She is shown kneeling with her hands joined in prayer, a posture of humility and reverence that was a signature of Fra Bartolomeo’s devotional style. The Virgin is dressed in elegant Florentine fashion of the 15th century, featuring a delicate translucent veil and a rich crimson dress under a blue-violet mantle.
