This detail comes from the monumental Crucifix of San Domenico in Arezzo, created by Giunta Pisano, the teacher of Giotto. This work is historically significant as it represents the transition from the stiff, formal Byzantine "Christus Triumphans" (Triumphant Christ) to the more human and emotional "Christus Patiens" (Suffering Christ).
