This dramatic work depicts a legendary encounter from the Acts of Peter. As Saint Peter flees Rome to escape persecution, he meets a vision of Christ carrying the cross toward the city. When Peter asks, "Domine, quo vadis?" Christ replies that he is going to Rome to be crucified again, prompting Peter to return and face his own martyrdom.
