This powerful 17th-century masterpiece was originally commissioned for an altar in St. Peter's Basilica. It depicts the stoic endurance of Saint Erasmus during his final torture. Michelangelo masterfully balances the visceral drama of the scene with classical order, featuring a pagan priest pointing toward a statue of Hercules while heavenly cherubs descend with the palm of martyrdom.
