Description:
This 19th-century watercolor depicts an intimate indoor scene, characteristic of the Orientalist style that romanticized Middle Eastern and North African cultures. A woman reclines comfortably on a red velvet or plush sofa, dressed in a pink silk robe with a blue sash in her hair. She is smoking a waterpipe (hookah/narghile) with a long green hose.
