Description:
This dynamic and richly toned drawing, Alexander at the Tomb of Cyrus, depicts the powerful Macedonian conqueror, Alexander the Great, at the resting place of his admired predecessor, Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Persian Empire. The work, created by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione around 1645–1650, is executed in oil paint, heightened with white, on laid paper, a unique technique that lends the piece a painterly depth and dramatic texture.
