A stunning pinnacle of Florentine Baroque art. The painting depicts the biblical heroine Judith after she has decapitated the Assyrian general Holofernes to save her people. Allori masterfully contrasts Judith's calm, idealized beauty and her magnificent, shimmering golden-yellow silk dress with the gruesome reality of the severed head she holds by the hair.
