Description:
This oil on panel portrait was painted by Jan de Bray in May 1664 as a posthumous tribute, as both his parents had recently succumbed to the plague that affected Haarlem. The figures are shown in stark profile, a pose often used for classical ideals of dignity and permanence. The father, Salomon de Bray (a painter, architect, and poet), is in the foreground with his hand raised in a rhetorical pose, identifying him as a man of intellectual pursuits.
