In this compelling work, the Venetian master Guercino depicts the legendary meeting between Alexander the Great and the Bactrian princess Roxana. Following his conquest of the Sogdian Rock, Alexander was so captivated by Roxana’s beauty that he chose to marry her, a union that served both romantic and strategic purposes.
