Description:
This oil on panel painting from the Mannerist period of the Italian Renaissance depicts the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child with Saint Elizabeth and her son, the infant Saint John the Baptist. The figures are arranged in a sculptural, elegant composition, typical of Florentine Mannerism. The infant Christ, held by Mary, reaches playfully for the reed cross held by Saint John, an iconographic detail that foreshadows the future crucifixion and Christ's sacrifice.
