Description:
This 17th-century work is an etching depicting the Virgin Mary seated, holding the infant Christ on her lap. The Christ Child holds a small bird in his hand. The bird (often a goldfinch in Christian art) is a symbol that foreshadows Christ's future Passion or suffering. The figures have halos, and the scene is set outdoors with a low wall and a plant in a vase on the right. The print has been later hand-colored to add vibrant orange, blue, and brown tones.
