Description:
This tempera-on-panel painting, created around 1491 by the Italian artist Benvenuto di Giovanni, captures the dramatic biblical event with a crowded, detailed composition. The artwork depicts Jesus on the cross at the center, surrounded by numerous figures on foot and horseback, including Roman soldiers drawing lots for his garments and, at the bottom left, the Virgin Mary fainting in grief, supported by other holy women.
