Description:

This allegorical painting by Salvator Rosa depicts the personification of Fortune as a partially draped female figure with flowing hair, surrounded by various animals and symbolic objects. Fortune is shown holding a cornucopia, or horn of plenty, overflowing with treasures such as coins, jewels, and possibly other precious items, which are spilling out onto the animals below. The animals depicted include a donkey, a bull, a wild boar, a wolf, and birds of prey, each potentially representing different aspects of fortune – its capriciousness, abundance, or association with different societal strata. Some of the animals appear to be adorned or affected by the spilling riches, while others seem oblivious. The overall atmosphere is dynamic and somewhat chaotic, reflecting the unpredictable nature of fortune. The dark background and dramatic lighting focus attention on the central allegory and the interplay between Fortune and the creatures beneath her.
