Description:

This oil painting by the renowned Venetian artist Titian depicts a dramatic and pivotal moment from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The scene portrays the goddess Diana, attended by her nymphs, discovering the pregnancy of her companion Callisto. Callisto, identifiable by her shame and attempts to cover her swollen belly, had been seduced by Jupiter (Zeus) in disguise. Diana, known for her vow of chastity for herself and her followers, is shown with an expression of shock and anger, pointing accusingly at Callisto.
