Description:

This oil painting by the Italian Baroque artist Luca Giordano depicts a dramatic scene from the Roman legend of Lucretia. Lucretia, a fair-skinned, nude woman, is shown lying on a bed with white and blue drapery. Her body faces away from the viewer, but her head is turned back with a look of distress as a dark-haired man, Tarquin, leans over her. He has one hand on her shoulder and gestures outwards with the other. A dark-skinned servant stands to the right, observing the scene. The background features a draped, golden-yellow curtain. The overall mood is one of tension and impending violence.
