Description:

This painting illustrates the legendary moment from Roman mythology when the shepherd Faustulus discovers the twins Romulus and Remus—abandoned infants who were suckled by a she-wolf—and brings them to his home. In the scene, Faustulus presents the babies to his wife, Acca Larentia, who reaches out with maternal compassion to receive them. Two children, perhaps their own or symbols of domestic life, add emotional depth to the family setting. The composition captures a serene, pastoral backdrop with flocks and flowing water in the distance, symbolizing peace and the beginning of civilization. The rustic hut and gentle doves suggest divine protection. Cortona’s use of warm earth tones and flowing drapery enhances the tenderness of the moment, while his classical figures and soft light exemplify the Baroque ideal of theatrical realism balanced with grace.
