Description:

This iconic altarpiece depicts the Virgin Mary enthroned as the Queen of Heaven, holding the Christ Child. Mary is a central, majestic figure, wearing a deep blue mantle over a red garment and a white veil. She gazes out with a serene and compassionate expression. The infant Jesus, held in her lap, looks towards the viewer and raises his right hand in a blessing. Both figures are adorned with golden halos. Surrounding the Madonna and Child are numerous angels and saints, arranged in a hierarchical composition. They look towards Mary and Jesus with expressions of adoration and reverence. The throne is ornate and architectural, suggesting a heavenly court. The background is a rich gold leaf, typical of the period, which emphasizes the sacredness and timelessness of the scene.
