Description:

This iconic altarpiece depicts the Virgin Mary enthroned, holding the Christ Child in her lap. Mary is portrayed as a majestic figure, wearing a dark blue mantle over a red garment and a white veil. She has a serene expression and gazes slightly to her right. The infant Jesus, also with a halo, looks out towards the viewer and holds a scroll. They are surrounded by angels, who flank the throne on either side, gazing towards the Madonna and Child with reverence. The throne itself is ornate and suggests a heavenly setting. The background is a rich gold leaf, typical of the Byzantine-influenced Italian painting of the era, which emphasizes the sacredness of the scene.
