Description:

This dynamic oil painting by Luca Giordano captures a moment of mythological drama. In the foreground, the nude goddess Venus reclines on a bed draped with blue and red fabric, her gaze directed upwards and to the left. Beside her, the helmeted god of war, Mars, embraces her, his expression one of surprise and concern as he points towards the upper right of the canvas. A net, seemingly cast upon them, drapes over their legs. Below them, Cupid, the winged god of love, sleeps peacefully on a cushion, his bow and arrows lying beside him. To the right, Vulcan, the blacksmith god and husband of Venus, appears as an older, bearded man lifting a net, seemingly having caught the lovers in their secret embrace.
