Description:

This serene and emotionally resonant painting depicts the Pietà, a traditional Christian subject showing the Virgin Mary cradling the body of her deceased son, Jesus Christ, after the Crucifixion. Mary is seated in the center, draped in a deep blue mantle, her expression conveying profound sorrow as she looks down at Jesus. Christ's pale body lies across her lap, his head resting against her arm, a visible wound on his side. Several other figures surround them, each expressing their grief in different ways. To the left, a young man, possibly John the Evangelist, stands with his hands clasped in prayer, gazing upwards with anguish. Behind him, another figure kneels, tenderly supporting Christ's arm. On the right, Mary Magdalene kneels with her hands clasped, her face downcast in sorrow. Behind her, an older man, likely Joseph of Arimathea, stands with his hands also clasped, his expression one of solemn grief.
