Description:

This altarpiece depicts a poignant and sorrowful scene following the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The lifeless body of Christ lies horizontally in the center foreground, supported by grieving figures. Mary Magdalene, with her characteristic long, flowing hair, kneels at his feet, tenderly holding them. The Virgin Mary, cloaked in a dark blue mantle, is supported by other women, her face filled with anguish as she looks down at her son. Several other figures surround the body, including Saint John the Evangelist, dressed in a red robe, who clasps his hands in prayerful sorrow. An older man with a white beard, possibly Nicodemus or Joseph of Arimathea, stands nearby, his expression grave.
