Description:

This densely populated and emotionally charged painting depicts the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus is centrally positioned on the cross, his body illuminated against a dramatic sky with swirling clouds. Above his head, the inscription "INRI" is clearly visible. To either side of Jesus, two thieves are also crucified. Below the crosses, a large crowd of figures is gathered, displaying a range of emotions from grief and despair to curiosity and malice. At the foot of Jesus's cross, several figures are prominently depicted, including the Virgin Mary, who is often shown being comforted by others. Mary Magdalene is typically portrayed kneeling and weeping. Soldiers in various forms of armor and attire are present, some on horseback, overseeing the execution. Other individuals in the crowd, dressed in the fashion of the time the painting was created, react to the scene with gestures of sorrow, prayer, or mockery.
