Description:

This painting depicts Saint Sebastian, a Christian martyr, tied to a column and pierced by arrows. He is shown as a young, muscular man with long blondish hair, his body contorted in pain yet his gaze directed upwards, possibly towards divine salvation. He is mostly nude, with a cloth draped around his waist. Several arrows protrude from his torso and limbs. The column to which he is bound is part of a ruined classical structure, with fragments of arches and brickwork visible. Twisted, bare branches intertwine around the column and the architectural remains, adding to the sense of desolation. In the upper left corner, a small winged figure, possibly an angel, flies towards Sebastian.
