Description:

This monumental and serene altarpiece depicts the Virgin Mary seated majestically on a raised platform, holding the sleeping Christ Child in her lap. She is clad in a deep blue mantle lined with gold over a rich gold brocade gown. Her hands are clasped in prayer, and she wears a simple white veil. Surrounding the Virgin and Child are numerous figures, arranged symmetrically on either side. These include angels with serene expressions, as well as various saints and historical figures, identifiable by their traditional attributes or attire. To the left stand figures including Saint John the Baptist with his camel-hair tunic and staff, and possibly Saint Bernardino of Siena. To the right, figures include Saint Jerome holding a book, Saint Peter Martyr with a wound in his head, and possibly others.
