Description:

This dramatic painting depicts the biblical story of Judith and Holofernes. Judith, a beautiful widow, is shown holding the severed head of Holofernes, the Assyrian general who threatened her city. She gazes out at the viewer with a determined expression, a bloody sword held in her right hand. Holofernes' head, with dark, matted hair and a beard, is clutched in Judith's left hand. An elderly woman, likely Judith's maidservant Abra, stands behind her, looking on with a mixture of concern and triumph. Judith is dressed in a rich, golden gown with a red cloak and a white and blue striped sash. The background is dark and shadowy, focusing the viewer's attention on the central figures. The lighting is dramatic, highlighting Judith's face and the gruesome trophy of her deed.
