Description:

This is a painting titled "King David" by Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, 1591-1666), an Italian Baroque painter. The work was completed around 1651. The painting depicts King David, a biblical figure, seated in royal attire. He wears richly colored robes in pink, gold, blue, and white with a turban and crown. He holds a scepter in one hand while his other hand rests on a stone tablet or panel inscribed with Latin text that reads "GLORIOSA DICTA SVNT DE TE CIVITAS DEI" ("Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God") and "PSALM 86" (which would be Psalm 87 in modern Bible numbering). David appears contemplative, with his head slightly bowed, suggesting a moment of reflection or melancholy.
